The best toothpastes are cream or gel types that are nonabrasive and contain fluoride. You should not use toothpastes that contain gritty abrasives. These toothpastes are to harsh on your tooth specially in areas where the root surface or dentin is exposed. With time toothpastes that contain grainy abrasives will cut into your tooth structure like sandpaper.
Dr. Alavi can prescribes nonabrasive prescription toothpastes and gels that contain 5X the amount of fluoride than over-the-counter toothpastes and also contain tri-calcium phosphate which greatly strengthen your teeth against decay.
