SCALING & ROOT PLANING POST-TREATMENT CARE

Your gums may be sore for several days until they heal. Warm salt water rinses can be helpful promote gum tissue healing. Prescription mouth rinses may also be given in our Santa Rosa dental office to promote tissue healing and reduce inflammation and bacteria creating an oral environment for optimal healing. Complete healing of the gums will take several weeks.

Your teeth may also become temporarily sensitive after a deep cleaning as a result of removing the calcified buildup and bacteria on the root surfaces. Prescription toothpastes and in-office dental varnishes can be applied to the teeth to help reduce their sensitivity.

Do not floss or brush for the first night after a deep cleaning, and be gentle with flossing and brushing for the first week. However, excellent oral hygiene home care is critical for a successful outcome after scaling and root planing.
